Art & Environment Prize 2024 - Winner

We are delighted to announce the decision of the jury, chaired by Lee Ufan and made up of guest personalities: Laurent Le Bon, Wim Wenders, Djabril Boukhenaïssi, as well as members of Lee Ufan Arles and Maison Guerlain: Esra Joo, Gabrielle Saint-Genis, Ann Caroline Prazan, Juliette Vignon and Claire Coletti, to award the second Lee Ufan Arles x Guerlain Art & Environment Prize to Caroline Corbasson.

Born in 1989 and of French-Canadian origin, Caroline Corbasson explores our place in the universe through scientific and collective imaginations, astrophysics and cosmology. Her research questions the ambivalence of human knowledge and the way in which scientific discoveries renew our apprehension of the cosmos and our understanding of our origins.

For the first time, Caroline Corbasson has turned her attention to a nearby phenomenon that was particularly important in her childhood, and which is invisibly present in her work: the wind.

Having grown up in Texas, where tornado warnings are frequent, the refuge of the center room in which the whole family waited for the storm to pass was for Corbasson the mixed place of fear in the face of the elements and excitement, of calm at the center of a chaotic world.

The project submitted for the Prix Art et Environnement 2024 examines this ambivalent force, which is both devastating and spiritual. The uncontrollable, furious wind that tends to increase with global warming, but also the pollinating, life-giving wind.

During her residency at Atelier MA, Caroline Corbasson hopes to observe this phenomenon in the Arles region, developing a new means of expression that translates the wind into works combining charcoal drawing, painting, photography and, for the first time, poetry.

This residency will give rise to an exhibition at Atelier MA in summer 2025.
